Polarization at LEP

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6118341
With the increasing understanding of spin motion in e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage rings over the last few years, prospects for obtaining polarized beams in LEP have improved. Although depolarizing resonances still present a major problem, some practical experience, together with recent theoretical advances, make their compensation appear more tractable than previously believed. By making relatively modest provisions in LEP it is hoped that transversely-polarized beams will be demonstrable at around 50 GeV during Phase I operation. In the higher energy range, where requirements become more stringent, the practicability of polarized beams is still uncertain. 9 references, 2 figures.
