Effective-Lagrangian calculation of the. pi pi. eta decay mode of the tau lepton

The decay rate for tau/sup -/..--> nu pi../sup -/..pi../sup 0/eta is calculated using a general low-energy effective Lagrangian for pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The parameters in the Lagrangian are determined from vector-meson decay data. To eliminate uncertainties due to pseudo- scalar mixing and chiral-symmetry breaking, the calculation is normalized using the measured decay rate for eta..--> pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/..gamma... The predicted branching fraction is B = (14/sub -10//sup +19/) x 10/sup -4/. .AE
