Sponsored by GM, The Department of Energy, and The Society of Engineers, Sunrayce U.S.A. began July 9th, from Lake Buena Vista, Florida, passed through 8 states, and ended at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, on July 18th. The goal of each team was to create an energy-efficient, aerodynamic solar vehicle. The designs of the cars were diverse, and each entrant displayed a great deal of imagination and ingenuity. However, each team did have some major design and rules requirements to follow. There was also a variance in the cost and building of these vehicles. This range went from $40,000 and 2 months for Colorado State University; to $800,000 and 2 years for the University of Michigan. Most of the crews were composed of 20 to 30 students. Silver-zinc batteries seemed to be favored by most of the participants, although some of the teams did utilize other types. The first three to finish (based on the lowest elapsed time for completing the course) were: The University of Michigan's Sunrunner; Western Washington University's Viking XX; and the University of Maryland's Pride of Maryland.
