The computation time associated with the evaluation of all the credible outage contingencies in a composite power network can be quite large depending upon the number of generating units and transmission lines, the topology of the network, and the solution technique. It has been observed that when using an A.C. load flow method, the execution time required for evaluating a generating unit outage is lower than that for a line outage. The computation time required to solve a line outage also increases quite quickly compared to that for a generating unit outage as the size of the system increases. This paper provides a simple method for calculating adequacy indices for a small area in the large power network when considering transmission line outages. The number of outage events that are required to be solved reduces considerably and so does the computation time. The application of the proposed method, its strengths and weaknesses are illustrated using the standard IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS).
