The light rare earth diantimonides LaSb/sub 2/, CeSb/sub 2/, NdSb/sub 2/ and SmSb/sub 2/ were synthesized from the elements. It was found that all the diantimonides of light rare earths crystallize with a rhombic structure of the SmSb/sub 2/ type, while YbSb/sub 2/ crystallizes in a structure of the ZrSe/sub 2/ type. The stability of crystal lattices depends on the size of the ions, the electrochemical nature of the components, and their electronic structure. The crystal structure stability of rare earth diantimonides is basically governed by the state of the rare earth ion. Study of the Gd-Sb, Tb-Sb, Dy-Sb, Ho-Sb, Er-Sb, and Tm-Sb phase diagrams by DTA revealed thermal effects, whose number was maximum when a Tamman triangle was constructed for a composition corresponding to approx. 66.6 at. % Sb. i.e., the diantimonide.
