This article proposes specific measures in order to preserve all types of agricultural resources, to maintain the ecological balance, to move toward a characteristically Chinese style, and to modernize China's socialist agriculture. Methods suggested to improve the ecological environment include the planting of trees and plants in mountain areas and rocky slopes and hills; a reduction of cultivation and the introduction of animal husbandry in drought and semidrought areas; the planting of trees or economical timber along roadsides, rivers, canals, and in villages; the development of timber for firewood, methane gas, small coal pits, small-scale hydroelectric power units, and solar energy; the reduction of industrial pollution; the development of ''rain-nurtured agriculture'' and ''water-saving agriculture''; the construction of irrigation and drainage channels or well-irrigation in the saline-alkaline soil of northern China; and the digging of deep trenches for water irrigation in the southern paddy fields. It is proposed that the most important ways of improving the ecological environment and establishing ecological agriculture are to change from extensive management to intensive management and from unit management to comprehensive management.
