A series of core-holes over a distance of 19,000 ft along Bald Head Shoal Channel, just south of Bald Head Island, Long Bay, contain a Danian depositional sequence, a previously unrecognized Ypresian depositional sequence, and two sequences of the Castle Hayne Limestone. The Danian sequence has minimum thickness of 10.2 ft and consists of olive, calcareous, glauconitic, very fine to fine bioturbated quartz sand. Four samples from this unit contain a moderately well-preserved, low diversity nannofossil assemblage that includes species with first appearances in the Danian, species which persist across the K/T boundary, and redeposited Cretaceous species. This assemblage is very similar to lower Danian nannofossil assemblages described from K/T boundary sections in Texas, Denmark, Spain, Tunisia and deep-sea cores. In the absence of Chiasmolithuis danicus this assemblage correlates to the lower Danian Cruciplacolithus tenuis Zone (NP2, CP1b) and Global Coastal Onlap Cycle (GCOC) TA1.2. Disconformably overlying the lower Danian depositional sequence is sandy, turritellid-mold packstone-wackestone with a thickness of 22.6 ft. Although no age-diagnostic microfossils were recovered, turritellids tentatively identified as Turritella gilberti suggest an early Eocene (Ypresian) age, and correlation to the Fishburne Formation of South Carolina, and the Bashi Marl and Hatchetigbee Formation of Mississippi, Alabama, and western Georgia, and correlation to GCOC TA2.5. Two sequences of the Castle Hayne Limestone disconformably overlie the Ypresian sequence. The lower sequence is tentatively correlated to GCOC TA3.4. The upper is correlated to GCOC TA3.5/3.6 on the basis of megafossils.
