This article describes the installation, operation and equipment involved in a rig-to-shore data telecommunications link established between offshore New Zealand-South Island and Dallas, Texas, in 1983. The hookup was used to transmit crucial drilling information from the Penrod 78 semisubmersible to Placid Oil Company's key U.S. managers. The telecommunications package was provided by NL Baroid Logging Systems as a day-rate option to its conventional computerized mud logging service.
