Thick (2-3 km) metaclastic sequences lie unconformably above drift facies miogeoclinal rocks in the Talladega and western Blue Ridge belts. These Ordovician ( ) or younger sequences are deposited across tilted and broadly warped older strata in what appear to be fault-bounded extensional basins. The basin fill in general appears to be coarsening, thickening, and shallowing upward with metaturbidite sequences, including olistostromal lobes, dominating within the lower parts, and coarse metasandstone and conglomerate, and carbonaceous metapelite, capped by metachert units in the upper part. Facies trends within the successor basin are highly oblique to those below the major unconformity at the base of the sequence. Coarse clastic units are polymictic and contain clasts derived from both Grenville basement and a cover sequence containing a significant volume of carbonate rock. Fine-grained clastics also commonly contain appreciable carbonate, and siliceous marbles are present at a number of localities within the lower successor basin units. An abundance of feldspar and unstable rock fragments characterize coarse clastic units. These and other relationships indicate rapid erosion of and proximity to the source rocks which probably occurred along basin margin fault scarps.
