Turbodrill, PDC bits spell success in Mobil's statfjord
This paper shows how a turbodrill-PDC-MWD combination has proven effective in reducing overall time to drill a 12 1/4- in. hole section in a North Sea oil field. Rotary drilling with rock bits had resulted in a short sidetrack in the pay zone due to a lost fish and formation faulting. A well-documented lithostratigraphy section for the Statfjord field is presented. Results indicate that for all turbodrill-PDC performances in 12 1/4-in. holes, the longer wells show greater improvements due to reduction in trip times. Further improvements in directional control, operating procedures, and bits are predicted. The paper suggests that the same improvements should be enjoyed if MWD tools are used with rotary assemblies.
