The layered compound (VO){sub 2}(CH{sub 2}(PO{sub 3}){sub 2}) {center dot} 4H{sub 2}O has been prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. The structure is orthorhombic, space group Pbca with a = 12.805(4) {angstrom}, b = 10.592(3) {angstrom}, c = 15.037(5) {angstrom}, Z = 8, D{sub x} = 2.462 g/cm{sup 3}, R = 0.0372, and R{sub w} = 0.0500 for 2,038 independent reflections. The structure is formed from layers of vanadium and oxygen atoms and methylenediphosphonate groups, with coordinated water molecules directed into the interlayer space, resulting in a layer repeat distance (d{sub 001}) of 15.037(5) {angstrom}. The layers contain two types of V{sup 4+}O{sub 6} octahedra connected through corners by (O{sub 3}PCH{sub 2}PO{sub 3}){sup 4{minus}} groups.
