Processing alumina gels: Effects on surface area and pore volume

Twelve compositions in the system aluminum (sec)butoxide (ASB)-water-isopropanol were processed to obtain powders by a sol-gel method. All mixtures were hydrolyzed at 80{degree}C, half with nitric acid and half without. The effects of the water/ASB ratio and acid were noted in terms of surface area, pore size distribution, and pore volume. For a given ratio of water/ASB, the total pore volume and average pore radius were smaller in samples prepared with acid. These samples had narrower pore size distributions as well. For samples prepared with acid, an increase in the water/ASB ratio up to 25 showed a decrease in total pore volume. The pore volume remained fairly constant for ratios > 25 moles water/ASB. The average pore radius was largest for samples prepared with 10 moles water/ASB.
