After the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea, British Gas Corporation developed a high-pressure natural gas transmission system of more than 3,500 miles and a distribution network that delivers an average of 4,000MMcfd. This national gas supply system and the distribution system require not only a high standard of installation but also safe and secure maintenance and operations. To help accomplish this, British Gas set up the Engineering Research Station (ERS) in 1966 for the study of mechanical engineering, materials technology, instrumentation, and electronics related to high pressure gas transmission, low pressure gas distribution and gas storage. ERS' main job is to develop technology, materials and expertise for high pressure gas transmission and medium and low pressure gas distribution. This article outlines some of ERS' accomplishments.
