The kinetics of the oxidative dimerization of p-substituted styrene under the action of Pd(II) acetate was studied. A kinetic isotopic effect of the reaction k(C/sub 6/H/sub 5/CH double bond CH/sub 2/)/k(C/sub 6/H/sub 5/CH double bond CD/sub 2/) = 3.0 +- 0.1 was found. The rate constants of the reaction obey the Hammett equation with slope rho = -2.4. The relative rate constants of transfer of a phenyl group to p-substituted styrene in the reaction of their oxidative arylation by benzene under the action of Pd(II) acetate were found by the method of competing reactions. The absence of an isotopic effect and a simple Hammett correlation was established for these constants; however, they satisfactorily follow a modified equation of the type of log (k/sub X//k/sup H/) = 1.65 sigma-0.95 sigma/sup +/.
