HVDC: an energy-transport alternative

Journal Article · · Electr. Forum; (United States)
OSTI ID:6107741
Public opposition to the expansion of power transmission systems and the effort to improve the national power network may be resolved by technological improvements in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission as an alternative to extra-high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) systems. HVDC projects were begun in 1954, but improvements in the silicon controlled rectifier, or thyristor, were necessary to make it available and reliable in the 1970s. Neither atmospheric conditions nor switching surges cause HVDC bipolar outages. Some applications of HVDC can defer the need for new power plants and transmission lines, while other applications can relieve environmental and safety problems.
