Golden opportunity: can utilities move fast enough to cash in on the telecommunications boom

Journal Article · · Energy Dly.; (United States)

If electric utilities can move fast enough to provide the rights-of-way for fiber optic links in telecommunications, the utilities may receive new wealth that has nothing to do with selling electricity. Experts estimate that utilities have only one year before the opportunity will close as American Telephone and Telegraph and competing common carriers begin expanding the fiber optic network. Utilities share many of the regulatory problems with routing that railroads and pipelines face, but they also have some advantages in sharing common load centers that the telecommunications companies want to serve. They also own or control distribution rights-of-way into homes and offices. Utilities could offer simple leases or enter into joint ventures.
