Reaction of Cs{sub 2}MoO{sub 4}, MoO{sub 3}, P{sub 2}O{sub 5}, and Mo at 950{degree}C gives a mixture of the title compound and Cs{sub 3}Mo{sub 6}P{sub 10}O{sub 38} as the major products. The compound Cs{sub 4}Mo{sub 6}P{sub 10}O{sub 38} crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2{sub 1}/m with a = 9.659(2), b = 14.404(2), c = 6.446(2) {angstrom}, and {beta} = 105.58(2){degree}. Important structural features include corner-sharing MoO{sub 6} octahedra containing Mo{sup 4+}, isolated octahedra containing Mo{sup 3+}, P{sub 2}O{sub 7}, and PO{sub 4} groups, and one-dimensional tunnels filled with Cs{sup +} cations.
