An experimental study on extinction and stability of tubular flames

Using a swirl-type burner, the characteristics of tubular flames in a rotating, axisymmetrical stretched flow field have been experimentally investigated for lean and rich methane/air and propane/air mixtures and for lean hydrogen/air mixtures. The tubular flame region and the corrugated flame region are mapped as functions of the fuel concentration and the tangential ejection velocity, and the variations of the flame diameter with the fuel concentration are also determined. The results qualitatively agree with the previous observation for lean mixtures and substantiate the domainant effect of the Lewis number on the characteristics of the tubular flames. A further detailed discussion has been made on the extinction characteristics of the tubular flame and the corrugation of the flame front.
