Vehicular applications of mechanical energy storage--FY79

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6106096

The goals of this project are to develop and evaluate mechanical-energy storage technology for application to electric, hybrid, and heat-engine vehicles and to maximize the commercial potential of the technology. Four studies were completed in FY79. Performance improvement related to mechanical-energy storage was the subject of two reports. Continuously variable transmission design was discussed in a third. Elastomeric braking was evaluated in a fourth. Two flywheel/electric systems were fabricated and partially tested. An elastomer-braking system design was initiated. Criteria for a vehicle powered by a flywheel/heat engine were formulated.
