A study of active regions on RS CVn stars

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6105074

Intense observational scrutiny was combined with theoretical modeling efforts for three regular RS CVn stellar systems, II Peg, UX Ari, and HR 1099. Observational analysis consisted of application of the technique of spectral subtraction to yield excess emission profiles for these stars; these profiles were considered indicative of extraphotospheric activity. The subtraction technique was applied to the H alpha, H beta, Ca II H, Ca II K, and Ca II infrared triplet lines, and the resulting fluxes were examined for correlations with phase and with each other. An analysis of the velocity information present in the line profiles was also attempted. Theoretical work consisted of the application of radiative transfer models to stellar plage and prominence models in an attempt to determine the physical nature of the active regions on these stars. The radiative transfer models were also used to test the limits of validity of the spectral subtraction technique itself.
