Alternative fuels for use in a hogged-fuel boiler

Our mill was unable to obtain sufficient hogged fuel to maintain the required steam generation from the hogged fuel boiler. Although coal and rubber appeared to be viable supplemental fuels, existing air quality permits would not allow their use. After extensive trials, it was determined that up to 13% coal by weight or up to 5% rubber by weight could be burned with the hogged fuel without causing a significant increase in particulate or SOx emissions. State agencies have since authorized the use of 13% coal or 2% rubber.
