Franklin 105 feller buncher: fifth-row thinning application

Journal Article · · South. J. Appl. For.; (United States)

A Franklin 105 feller buncher, equipped with a Tidewater DL-12 accumulating shear was used to remove every 5th row or harvest a corridor and to thin adjacent trees selectively in an 18-yr-old Pinus taeda plantation in Virginia in August 1982. The time taken to move to a tree and shear it was influenced by the number of residual trees per acre and whether the operation was row/corridor harvesting or selective thinning. The time taken to move to dump, dump load and align bunches was influenced by the average diameter and number of trees in the shear head before dumping. Production costs were higher for selective thinning than for row/corridor harvesting. Average damage was to 49 residual trees per acre, with the area of damage averaging 31 squared inch. 1 reference.
