A coating application apparatus is described for use in forming an envelope of separator material around a battery plate. The apparatus consists of: (a) tanks wherein separate selected components for the production of the envelope can be housed, wherein at least one of the components comprises a solvent bearing compound. The tanks are arranged in a sequential order for sequential dipping of a battery plate therein to form the envelope; (b) a liquid attracting surface comprising a screen disposed between the first and second tank of the sequentially arranged plurality of tanks, the surface attracting and retaining liquid thereon when contacted by a wet battery plate; (c) a battery plate drying means disposed sequentially beyond the last tank of the plurality of tanks; and (d) carrier means to hold battery plates in suspension and to transport the battery plates from tank to tank, to the liquid attracting surface, and to the drying means.
