Nuclear polarization of /sup 3/He gas at low temperatures by optical pumping

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6100446
A color centre laser system has been developed that can produce over 60% nuclear polarization of /sup 3/He atoms in the gas phase at room temperature. A discussion of the optical pumping technique efficiency in /sup 3/He as a function of pumping intensity and other important parameters is presented. At low temperatures, the rate of metastability exchange collisions limits the maximum nuclear polarization to relatively small values. 34 references, 5 figures.
