At low temperatures and high magnetic fields the ratio of Hall voltage to electric current is quantized to rho/sub xy/ = h/ie/sup 2/ to better than 2 parts in 10/sup 7/ (h is Planck's constant, e is the electron charge and i is an integer). Simultaneously the electrical resistance of the sample drops to a very low value. A state reminiscent of superconductivity is obtained. 6 references.
