Title: Structures and properties of Rni/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/, R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, or Sm

Journal Article · · Inorg. Mater. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Powder x-ray structure analysis has given the crystal structures of RNi/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/ (R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm), which belong to the KAu/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/ structure type (space group I4c2). Magnetic-susceptibility and cell-volume suggest a defect structure, LaNi/sub 4-x/Sn/sub 2/. The compounds of CeNi/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/, PrNi/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/ and NdNi/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/ are paramagnetic materials at 78-293 K, with xi(T) following the Curie-Weiss law, while LaNi/sub 4-x/Sn/sub 2/ is a Pauli paramagnetic, and xi for SmNi/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/ has a considerable contribution from the van Vleck paramagnetism. Electron-type conduction occurs in LaNi/sub 4-x/Sn/sub 2/ and CeNi/sub 4/Sn/sub 2/, for which temperature-dependence measurements have been made for the resistivity and differential thermo-emf.
