White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Reservation: data on road-killed animals, 1969--1977

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6098732

During nine years (1969--1977), 126 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were killed by highway vehicles on the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge, Tennessee Reservation. Mortality was highest in the fall, and more males than females were killed among both fawns and adults. While traffic volume increased 8.2% annually, deer road-kills increased 43.8% annually. Increased road-kills were attributed primarily to an increase in the resident population.
