Electrochemical behavior of steel St3 in solutions of lithium borates

Journal Article · · Prot. Met. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6098696
Anodic and cathodic polarization curves were recorded for the electrochemical oxidation of steel St3 in 0.1 N solutions of LiBO/sub 2/, Li/sub 2/B/sub 4/O/sub 7/, and LiB/sub 5/O/sub 8/, mixed at 20/degree/C with and without additions of NaCl. The most negative corrosion potential was seen in the solution of LiBO/sub 2/. The lowest and highest rates of anodic dissolution of the steel were seen, respectively, in solutions of Li/sub 2/B/sub 4/O/sub 7/ and LiB/sub 5/O/sub 8/. The improvement in the pitting-corrosion resistance of steel St3 in the borates at concentrations of NaCl up to 0.5 g/liter decreased in the order LiBO/sub 2/ > Li/sub 2/B/sub 4/O/sub 7/ > LiB/sub 5/O/sub 8/; at higher values of NaCl concentration (up to 10 g/liter) this order was reversed.
