Inelastic low-energy collisions between alkali metal ions and inert gas atoms make it difficult to measure the total ionization and charge-exchange cross sections sigma by using a transverse electric field, because sigma has a threshold dependence on the angle and energy, and because autoionizing states are preferentially excited. The conventional transverse field technique is modified so that it becomes capable of measuring not only sigma but also the energy distributions of the secondary ions and the effects due to scattering of the primary ions. Measured values are cited for the total ionization and charge-exchange cross sections for collisions of K/sup +/ with Ar, Kr, and Xe atoms at energies 0.5--7.0 keV. Diagrams of the potential curves for the K/sup +/--Ar system are used to discuss the ionization and charge-exchange processes.
