Quasiparticle ballistics in /sup 3/He-A

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6096888
The propagation of quasiparticles is considered in superfluid /sup 3/He-A cooled (in a magnetic field greater than or equal to 6 kG) to temperatures low enough that the quasiparticle mean free path is substantially larger than the characteristic scale of a texture. Under these conditions quasiparticles propagate ballistically and can be reflected from textural variations, a phenomenon similar to, but rather simpler than, the Andreev reflection well known in superconductors. It is shown that because of this phenomenon the transport of heat and momentum in a flat-slab geometry should be extremely sensitive to the orientation of the magnetic field. Some of these effects should probably be observable with current cryogenics. 5 references, 1 figure.
