Geophysical prospecting off shore nearly doubled, to a total of 14,657 line-miles of marine seismic surveys. On land, seismic exploration was down to 143 miles. No drilling was done off shore, but on land 9 wells were drilled as against 3 in 1970; all were dry and abandoned. Footage increased by 148% to a total of 42,062 ft. There was little change in the concession situation. On shore, the total license area covered 50,988 sq miles, and off shore 365,017 sq miles. During its first full year of production, the onshore Kapuni field produced 10,625.87 MMcf of gas and 806,819 bbl of condensate. No plans are known regarding development of the large offshore Maui field.
