Pulse compression by pulse-stacking in a KrF amplifier

A laser pulse-compression technique employed to obtain intense pulses (approx.1 GW) from an electron-beam-pumped KrF amplifier is demonstrated. This technique consists of time-sequencing and angle-coding separate pulses through the amplifier. The system described uses four pulses for a nominal temporal compression factor of 4. The input vs output temporal pulse shapes and saturation characteristics are demonstrated. Also discussed are the issues of parasitic oscillations, optical cross talk, saturation pulse broadening, and limitations on scaling to larger compression factors.
