Improvement of the solar-cycle variation of IRI lower ionosphere models by means of radio wave propagation data

Conference · · Adv. Space Res.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6094168
Day-time and night-time radiowave absorption data obtained from observations performed in Central Europe are compared with absorption values calculated from the electron density profiles of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) using a full-wave method. Discrepancies between the observed and calculated absorption values were found for the diurnal and solar-cycle variation. Solar cycle variation was found to be much greater in the IRI data than in the observational data. To readjust the observational data, a statistical method is presented which is based on the relation between solar-activity electron density and electron density in the D-region of the ionosphere. The modified electron density profiles are presented in the form of a series of graphs. 8 references.
