Acoustic logging is generally performed in open boreholes because it is more efficient to transmit acoustic energy into the rock formation without casing and cement. Logging through casing is not easy because of spurious signals, including waves that travel along the steel pipe and cement. When the cement bond is poor, casing waves dominate the full waveform. A number of theoretical works have studied the effects of casing or invasion on acoustic wave propagation in a borehole. The prototype Exxon multipole tool was originally designed for open-hole logging and contains two source compartments and two receiver compartments. Each compartment contains a monopole and quadrupole transducer, although a dipole transducer can be substituted for the quadrupole transducer. The separations between sources and receivers are 6 ft, 8 ft and 10 ft. The monopole sources and receivers are of conventional design.
