Infill drilling has become a popular method for Permian Basin operators to provide substantial additional oil reserves. Research in several W. Texas fields has revealed that, while wide spacing has proved effective in many oil field applications, infill drilling combined with waterflooding can contribute to additional reserves as well as provide increased current production. Studies were made in 7 W. Texas oil fields as infill drilling progressed from 40-acre to 20-acre spacing, and eventually to 10-acre spacing. In all cases, infill drilling production history shows that additional oil recovery was realized by improving reservoir continuity with increased well density. Evaluation of the potential increased recovery from an infill well can be made by examining the discontinuous nature of porosity stringers in W. Texas carbonate reservoirs.
