In this process of producing oil from a permeable stratum containing a heavy crude oil, the stratum is penetrated by an injection well and an offset production well. A hot, non-aqueous gas is driven through a horizontal zone of the stratum at an intermediate level so as to displace oil into the production well, which is opened up to increased fluid flow. Thereafter, steam is injected through the injection well along the entire face of the stratum and driven toward the production well so as to displace additional oil into the production well. Steam injection is followed by a waterflood to drive additional oil into the production well. (7 claims)
