A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is described which consists of: first and second crankshafts disposed apart from and parallel with each other, first and second pistons operatively connected to the first and second crankshafts through connecting rods, respectively; first and second cylinders for slidably accommodating therein the first and second pistons, respectively; first and second cylinder heads positioned on one end of the first and second cylinders, respectively, each cylinder head having overhead valves; first and second camshafts driving the overhead valves of each of the first and second cylinder heads, respectively; first and second crankcases within which the first and second crankshafts are rotatably mounted, respectively. Both the crankshafts are interlocked with each other to rotate synchronously, and the first and second cylinders are arranged adjacent to each other in an axial direction of the crankshafts, and the first and second crankcases are displaced axially of the second and first camshafts, respectively; and the first and second camshafts being located overhead the first and second cylinder heads, respectively.
