In the early days, if a well failed to come in naturally, the well was shot with nitroglycerin and cleaned out. This was in reality the first fracture treatment. During the 1940's, the big innovation was a treating method called acidizing. During the 1950's, a remedial method, born of necessity, was hydraulic fracturing. By 1958 and 1959, new knowledge about perforating consisted of (1) the need for less perforating in the pay zone, and (2) the need for larger fracturing volumes. A chart shows that excessive perforating, or too few holes, are equally detrimental. Fracture orientation and type can be determined with inflatable impression packers after hydraulic fracturing. Fracture determination and section treated can be evaluated very well and economically with differential temperature logging. Promise is indicated by radioactive sand surveys providing higher radioactive sand concentrations are used and higher tool sensitivity and closer supervision is obtained. Drill stem testing, if properly used, can yield valuable completion information.
