This patent describes a method for precipitating particulate matter from a flowing gas stream. It comprises: furnishing a flowing gas stream containing particulate matter entrained therein; pretreating the particulate matter of the gas stream, by supplying to the gas stream a conditioning agent selected from the group consisting of sulfur trioxide, a gaseous compound containing ammonia, and water vapor, and substantially simultaneously, establishing an electrostatic potential between the conditioning agent and the particulate matter whereupon the conditioning agent deposits upon the particulate matter; and electrostatically precipitating the particulate matter from the conditioned gas stream.
