Oil and gas on the continental shelf

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6091193
The new areas of current and future offshore exploration activity center on the continental shelves and involve about 3 billion acres within 150 sedimentary areas around the world. In the US Arctic alone, where the principal current attraction lies in the Beaufort Sea, about 24 billion bbl of oil and 109 trillion CF of gas await discovery. In the lower Pacific area, giant gas discoveries on the Australian northwest shelf show great promise. Development and utilization of these offshore hydrocarbons hinge on continuous improvement in technology and on raising the required capital. The nonresource constraints to the development and utilization of offshore hydrocarbons are (1) the economics of utilization, (2) the availability of financing, (3) conflicts over rentsharing and resource ownership, and (4) social and environmental issues
