The equilibrium, Mercier stability, and neoclassical transport (in the 1/{nu} regime) properties of two {ell} = 2 torsatrons, the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) and URAGAN-2M, are compared. ATF and URAGAN-2M have 12 and 4 field periods, respectively. The two torsatrons have similar arrays of coils. Dipole and quadrupole magnetic fields can be used to improve transport at zero beta, but increasing beta tends to undo the optimization. 18 refs., 19 figs., 2 tabs.
