Design and calibration of a Cf-252 irradiation facility

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6090274
This dissertation describes the design and calibration of the SEFOR Calibration Center. The former SEFOR (Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor) was modified to accommodate a variety of Cf-252 neutron sources for educational and research activities. Major features of the SEFOR facility are the Refueling Cell free field, bare and D/sub 2/O moderated, source configurations and a thermal irradiator with a pneumatic sampler changer. Design details and calculations are presented in this dissertation. Transport calculations were performed to predict the neutron spectra within the refueling cell. The method of discrete ordinates, using the ANISN computer code, was employed. This dissertation includes a description of the ANISN code along with sample computer print-outs. Comparison of calculated neutron spectra with experimental data is included. Threshold foil techniques were used by B. Brandon to measure the neutron spectra in the Refueling Cell and the results of these measurements are included in this dissertation.
