We study the role of both dynamical and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The quark self energy ..sigma.. can be uniquely separated into two terms; ..sigma../sub D/, due to dynamical symmetry breaking and ..sigma../sub E/, due to the presence of explicit chiral symmetry breaking terms in the QCD Lagrangian. The asymptotic behavior of both functions is determined. The dynamical and current quark masses are defined. To lowest order in g, the gauge field coupling constant and lambda = exp- (1/2) we obtain exact representations for the pion decay constant f/sub ..pi../ and electromagnetic form factor F/sub ..pi../(q/sup 2/). Using the experimental values of f/sub ..pi../ and lim F/sub ..pi../(q/sup 2/)/-q/sup 2/ ..-->.. /sup 00/ we estimate the dynamically generated quark mass to be 270 to 300 MeV, in good agreement with a value obtained from e/sup +/e-annihilation data. Using the known light current quark mass ratios we estimate their absolute magnitudes in two ways. Our results are m/sub ..mu../ = 1.8 +- 0.7 MeV, m/sub d/ = 4.3 +- 1.7 MeV and m/sub s/ = 112 +- 66 MeV at a renormalization point mass ..mu.. approx. 1 GeV.
