Direct epoxidation of polyfluoroalkyl-containing. beta. -hydroxy ketones

The authors have established for the first time that the reaction of fluoroalkyl-containing ..beta..-hydroxy ketones with iodine under mild conditions leads to ..cap alpha..,..beta..-epoxy ketones. The small decrease of the yield compared with the synthesis of compounds by the epoxidation of the corresponding ..cap alpha..,..beta..-enones with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium is compensated by the ease and speed of the reaction and by the use of more readily obtainable initial reagents; the fluoroalkyl-containing ..cap alpha..,..beta..-enones are obtained by the dehydration of the corresponding ..beta..-hydroxy ketones.
