Quasi-linear theory of parametric processes in unmagnetized plasma

Large amplitude, spatially modulated high frequency waves produce a change in the low frequency properties of the plasma. These ponderomotive effects are studied with a quasi-linear theory of the Vlasov equation for general high frequency pump, sidebands, and low frequency waves. A ponderomotive correction to the Maxwellian distribution function is found to second order in the pump field. This ''renormalized'' distribution function exhibits the usual density self-modulation and an anisotropic change of temperature. A general dispersion relation is derived, which contains all previously known parametric processes and is correct to second order in the pump amplitude. The modifications in the stability analysis for the case of electron plasma wave scattered off an ion acoustic wave are examined.
