Borehole operating tool with fluid circulation through arms

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6086637
This patent describes an apparatus for performing operations in an oil well drilling borehole or other type of borehole. This apparatus consists of a number of interactive components which together function as an integrated functional device. The first component described is a cylindrical elongated body having a main borehole passing through it and also having a number of lateral openings. This cylindrical body is further characterized as having a number of circumferentially spaced directional chambers extending between the main bore and the lateral openings. Another element of the device which is discussed in detail consists of a number of expandable arms each having a first and second end and a bore which passes through the arm in its entity. The operating end of the arm has an operating modality present on it for engaging the side of a borehole and performing an operation on it. A principal feature of this apparatus detailed in the patent is the inclusion of a pivot means in the device. The pivot means is mounted with the body and with the first end of the expandable arms for mounting each of the expandable arms in one of the lateral body openings in order to enable movement between a closed position in which the arm is positioned in the lateral body opening and a second expanded operating position in which the operating end of the arm engages the borehole. An element of the device which serves a crucial function is a means for engaging the expandable arms and holding them in an operating position.
