Internal R and D task summary report: reactor yields
This report summarizes all R and D work performed under the SRC-I Demonstration Plant Contract to support design of the plant's SRC reaction area. The work was initially conducted by Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (APCI), and continued by International Coal Refining Co. (ICRC). A background of the basic experimental techniques is provided, plus an analysis of the statistical significance of the product work-up methods. The key to the experimental procedure was the use of continuous stirred tank reactors, which are described in detail. The effects of process variables such as temperature, total pressure as well as hydrogen partial pressure, residence time, and solvent type are discussed in general. Also, extensive coverage is provided for the following areas: the effect of dissolver solids on conversion and product distribution; the effect of staged dissolvers on performance; the impact of including SRC recycle in the design; and an in-depth evaluation of the effect of reactor hydrodynamics on conversion and product distribution. A comparison of bench-scale and Wilsonville pilot plant data is presented. Finally, a discussion of the impact of this laboratory data on the plant design is presented. 25 references, 155 figures, 103 tables.
