Scale suppression in lime/limestone FGD systems

The experimental results on the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate in a simulated lime/limestone scrubber for SO/sub 2/ indicated that: (a) NO acts as an inhibitor for sulfite oxidation; (b) NO/sub 2/ acts as a promoter either catalytically or as a direct oxidant; (c) the inhibitory effect of NO is not adequate to suppress the promotive effect of NO/sub 2/ at a NO/NO/sub 2/ mole ratio of 9 and a NO/sub x/ concentration of 800 ppM (typical flue gas); (d) at a NO/NO/sub 2/ mole ratio of about 12, the oxidation is no greater than it would be without NO/sub x/ present; (e) oxidation is minimized at a NO/NO/sub 2/ mole ratio greater than about 20; and (f) scaling in scrubbers on high NO/sub x/-emitting furnaces, such as cyclones, could be significantly different from that encountered in lower temperature units. A prescrubber for NO/sub 2/ removal should be effective in inhibiting sulfite oxidation in the SO/sub 2/ scrubber. This has not been effectively demonstrated in the laboratory mainly because of an inability to analyze for NO/sub 2/ in the exit gas from the prescrubber. 4 figures, 1 table.
