Nb/sub 3/Al formation process in powder metallurgy processed wires and sputtered multilayer films

The formation process of Nb/sub 3/Al by a solid state reaction between Nb and Al is examined for both powder metallurgy processed wires and sputtered multilayer films. It is turned out that the diffusion of Al into Nb layer plays an important role in the formation process of Nb/sub 3/Al, but the extremely thin Nb thickness is not necessarily needed for the solid state reaction on the basis of the study of multilayered films. The authors discuss on the relationship between the Nb layer thickness and the areal reduction ratio to the Nb/sub 3/Al formation in the powder metallurgy process.
