Asymmetric Fano line profiles have been observed by autoionization for vibrational Rydberg series of naphthalene. Specific vibrational excitation in the Rydberg series was made possible by two-color excitation that excites the corresponding vibration in the intermediate S/sub 1/ level. An observed series of autoionizing states involving the ..nu../sub 8-bar/ x ..nu../sub 7/ vibration was determined to belong to members n = 11 to 22 of a Rydberg series having a quantum defect of delta = 0.10 and converging to 1537 cm/sup -1/ above the adiabatic ionization potential. The line shapes were analyzed in terms of degenerate resonance interference between optically active discrete and continua states. Observed linewidths were as narrow as 6 cm/sup -1/ for naphthalene and 3 cm/sup -1/ for naphthalene-d/sub 8/.
